As the financial landscape shifts, we are looking for ways to both understand and respond to changes in accounting and finance.
Over the past few years our research has been published in a range of quality journals. Subjects include financial reporting and disclosure, auditing quality, corporate governance, corporate ownership structure, public accounting, management accounting, social and environmental accounting, the accountancy profession, accounting history, Islamic accounting and finance and accounting education.
We also look to increase understanding of the social, economic and political interactions arising through the practice of accounting and auditing. And, through collaboration with leading firms, we are closing the gap that has emerged between academic accounting research and the real world of accountancy practice.
Whatever your area of specialism, the PhD programme is three years full-time or six years part-time. During that time, youll have two supervisors who are experts in your area of study.
By the end of your research period, youll complete a thesis of up to 100,000 words, the aim of which is to demonstrate your capacity to pursue scholarly research independently. It must make an original contribution to knowledge and be of a standard appropriate for publication in a high quality, peer-reviewed academic journal of international standing. Its usual for a PhD thesis to contain the equivalent of at least three articles which are eligible for publication in such a journal.
Once youve submitted your thesis and it has been read by two examiners, youll take an oral examination or 'viva' during which youll be expected to show mastery of your topic.

Whatever your chosen field, youll require research skills, particularly research method skills, and a wider range of personal transferable skills. Thats why our Researcher Development Programme is designed to get you off to a good start and continue to support you throughout your studies.
The programme is open to all students registered for higher degrees by thesis and provides training intended to complement the discipline-specific training offered by the Business School. The skills youll acquire will not only help your research at Durham, but also enhance your employability.
The Programme is made up of a series of courses, online study and developmental opportunities throughout the year. Youll begin with a thorough online needs assessment, with the support of your supervisor, to allow you to plan your training activities. This is reviewed as you progress through your studies to ensure you are being offered the best development opportunities to enhance your career.

Universities in the United Kingdom use a centralized system of undergraduate application: University and College Admissions Service (UCAS). It is used by both domestic and international students. Students have to register on the UCAS website before applying to the university. They will find all the necessary information about the application process on this website. Some graduate courses also require registration on this website, but in most cases students have to apply directly to the university. Some universities also accept undergraduate application through Common App (the information about it could be found on universities' websites).
Both undergraduate and graduate students may receive three types of responses from the university. The first one, “unconditional offer” means that you already reached all requirements and may be admitted to the university. The second one, “conditional offer” makes your admission possible if you fulfill some criteria – for example, have good grades on final exams. The third one, “unsuccessful application” means that you, unfortunately, could not be admitted to the university of you choice.
All universities require personal statement, which should include the reasons to study in the UK and the information about personal and professional goals of the student and a transcript, which includes grades received in high school or in the previous university.
English Language Requirements
IELTS band: 7
IMPORTANT NOTE: Since April 2014 the ETS tests (including TOEFL and TOEIC) are no longer accepted for Tier 4 visa applications to the United Kingdom. The university might still accept these tests to admit you to the university, but if you require a Tier 4 visa to enter the UK and begin your degree programme, these tests will not be sufficient to obtain your Visa.
The IELTS test is most widely accepted by universities and is also accepted for Tier 4 visas to the UK- learn more.
